For many years now First B2B has had all our servers hosted at Rackspace. The advantage of this to our users is in the reliability of the infrastructure and the constant monitoring of our servers by the Rackspace support team. One side benefit is that for every server we purchase at Rackspace, they plant a tree in our name to offset the carbon emissions generated by the servers and in turn offsetting the carbon used in the process by our customers.
This year we have decided to go a step further. For every customer that has a licence with First B2B we are, in partnership with The National Forest, going to plant a tree to offset any carbon emissions caused by the use of our service. For those customers that exchange more than 250,000 documents per annum through us we will plant a further tree as they use more processing power.
Some people claim that replacing paper with electronic invoices in itself saves trees and so has environmental benefit. I myself am dubious about that as most paper companies will tell you that for each tree cut down to make paper they plant a further 3 trees, so in effect by not using paper invoices you could end up with less trees (bizarre I know).
More important to me is to ensure that the business efficiencies of electronic document exchange are understood and that, for whatever resources we use to provide the service, we offset the carbon produced appropriately. Now carbon offset is a little side benefit of using First B2B. Always nice to give something back.
